How To Navigate The New York City Subway

Here are my top tips for navigating the NYC subway system:

  • Know if you're going uptown or downtown - this will help you figure out which side of the tracks your train will arrive from.

  • If you're in NYC for a week, purchase the 7-day unlimited subway ticket for $31. If you're going to be in NYC for one month, I'd recommend purchasing the 30-day MetroCard for $127.

  • Use Google Maps to help you figure out your train route.

  • Download the NYC Transit app - this means you can plan ahead and check the train times in case there are any delays.

  • Don't forget to refill your Metro card - this saves you rushing to your train and realising you can't pass through because your Metro card has run out of credit!

  • Normally, the subway lines run every 2 to 5 minutes during peak hours (from 6:30am to 9:30am and from 3:30pm to 8pm). During midday, they run every 5 to 10 minutes and between 5 and 15 minutes until midnight. From midnight until 6:30am, trains run approximately every 20 minutes.
